Moving Forward

After several challenges and the cancellation of the site visit in Caldas da Rainha (Portugal), the mentor Rogerio Ivan (Oeste Sustentavel, Portugal) and the mentees Volodymyr Fedoryak (Kamianets – Podilsky, Ukraine), Vedad Viteskic (Sarajevo, Bosnia – Herzegovina) and Dimitra Anagnostopoulou (Tripolis, Greece) finally met in a webinar on the 17/09/2020 for a 2hrs training focusing on the innovative use of ESCOs for street lighting.

The project presented by the mentor Rogerio Ivan and his colleague José Eduardo Fanha Vieira, is one of the major streetlighting projects in the world, the only one not implemented by a regional public authority but by an association of municipalities.

The LED model used managed to provide the 60% of savings (street lights - dedicated budget) to all the local municipalities involved. In total 150000 luminaries were changed, through the OESTE LED STEETLIGHT ESCO project (budgeted for 40mln Eur). The project focused on the use of a specific ESCO model for street lighting, involving private investments and the actual implementation lasted only 6 months.

Mentees were also guided through the legal framework that was necessary for the development of such project and for the adaptation of ESCO models (usually used for buildings) to street lighting.
